In 2011, I helped launch a small contemporary art museum in downtown Raleigh, NC. We dreamed of a participatory forum where artists, designers, educators, and visitors could share a dialogue. I soon discovered that the title of museum actually hindered that vision. People have expectations and biases of what a museum is supposed to be. We needed to break through those barriers in order to succeed.
Breaking barriers is hard when you don’t know they exist
I once managed to make an ass of myself AND a would-be museum visitor because of hidden biases.
